Euro 2020 postponed, euro 2021 cancelled?

We are not going to make any charms in front of the goal: Euro 2020 (or 2021) will take place! This is what the organizer announced to the Daily Mail in mid-January: " Cancellation of the Euro is NOT an option ". According to the British daily, UEFA was then studying different options (full stadiums, between 50 and 100% capacity, between 20 and 30% capacity or behind closed doors) to maintain the organization of the flagship event which will decide the new queen team in Europe.

Another subject was on the table: that of a Euro 2020 with 4 organizing countries (Germany, Portugal, Russia and England). The goal? Reduce travel in Europe to limit the spread of the virus. As for the places for the semi-finals and the final of Euro 2020, they would be reduced: only Wembley would host the last 3 matches of the competition.

Neither the date of the first match nor the full schedule of Euro 2020 changes. Cancellation is not among these options and the European body even confirmed it a few days ago.

How many host countries at Euro 2021?

On January 21, 2021, UEFA issued a press release after a meeting with the 12 representatives of the host cities. Aleksander Čeferin, the Russian president of the federation, reaffirmed the desire to maintain the competition in the format planned last year.

“UEFA is committed to maintaining Euro 2020 in the twelve cities initially planned ”.

In the same press release, the former president of the Slovenian football federation recalled that flexibility was essential in this organization:

“I remain optimistic things can be very different with regards to the virus as we get closer to the tournament and it is important that we give host cities and governments as much time as possible to formulate an accurate picture of what will be possible in June and July .

Among the questions: the presence of supporters or not in the stadiums. A problem also mentioned by the president of UEFA.

“ The fans are a big part of what makes football special and that's true of the Euros as much as any game. We have to give ourselves as much space as possible to allow them to return to the stadiums. ”

Aleksander Čeferin and UEFA are giving host countries until April to decide. In any case, one thing to remember: Euro 2020 will indeed take place. We will have to celebrate it with great fanfare!
